Sea Swimming in St Ives

Tash Murch

There is nothing like a morning swim to start the day or an afternoon dip in the sea to cool you down on a hot summer's day. With the nearest beach, just moments from your doorstep, and several more all within a 10-minute stroll, sea swimming whilst staying in your luxury self-catering apartment is a must.

St Ives is home to some of Cornwall's most stunning beaches, with seven beaches all a short walking distance from the harbour. Whether you are looking for a lifeguarded beach for reassurance, or  the best beach to swim with the family (four-legged friends included) here are a few of our favourite swimming spots...

Porthmeor Beach

On your doorstep, Blue flag beach, Porthmeor offers you the perfect early morning swim location, only a few minutes walk from Sail Lofts, you will be in the sea before you even know it.

Facing the Atlantic Ocean, Porthmeor can work up a swell so it’s always recommended to check the weather forecast before getting in the water. Alternatively, if the waves are looking good, St Ives Surf School is conveniently located on the beach, if you fancy a surf lesson. This beach is also lifeguarded from April till October, 10 am-6 pm.

Porthminster Beach

An idyllic family beach with Blue flag awards that is lifeguarded from May to the end of September. Porthminster offers a safe place to swim and is only a 10 minute walk from your luxury apartment. The best time to swim is at high tide due to the beach being relatively flat. At low tide you will need to wade out quite a distance before reaching deep enough water for a swim. However, for a paddle, low tide is perfect!

Porthgwidden Beach

A stunning, sheltered beach that is popular with families and just a short 5 minute stroll from your luxury St Ives cottage. Porthgwidden beach, offers a safe lagoon which is perfect for an early morning swim before the beach gets busy for the day.

Bamaluz Beach

If you are on dog-friendly holiday with your four-legged and fancy a swim together, Bamaluz beach is a perfect secret cove situated between the harbour and Porthgwidden beach. What's even better is that it's dog-friendly all year...offering the perfect swim spot for all.

Carbis Bay Beach

Just around the corner from St.Ives, Carbis Bay beach will make you feel like you are abroad with it's white sandy beaches and clear blue sea. Located along the SouthWest Coast Path, a walk to Carbis Bay, where you are promised stunning views across the whole of St Ives Bay, would be a perfect way to spend a morning when you're all dried off.

Carbis Bay beach is one of the more sheltered beaches in the area making the sea much calmer for a swim, and with it also being a lifeguarded beach throughout the summer, you have the reassurance to relax and enjoy a wonderful swim.
