Sticking to those resolutions whilst on holiday…

Kelly Weaver

As the year draws to a close, our thoughts usually turn to a New Year and the possibility of a fresh start, a new you and those well-meaning, all too easy to break, New Year resolutions.

If your aim is to get fitter and more active in 2018 you don’t need to fall completely off the wagon if you choose a luxury apartment in St Ives. Here at Sail Lofts, St Ives we have a range of activities on our doorstep that can help you stay active during your holiday, and we reckon you’ll have quite a bit of fun at the same time. Why not opt for something new? You never know, you may discover a new passion.

Here are a just a few of our top picks to keep you on the move during your stay:

Walking

Free and easy, a brisk walk along our beautiful coastline is sure to keep that waistline in check whilst making the most of the lovely food and drink on offer in St Ives. For a moderate stroll head East and pick-up the coastal path towards Carbis Bay/Lelant. With beautiful views across St Ives Bay towards Godrevy this relatively flat walk is perfect to get the heart pumping but, if you’re after something more challenging then a westward hike towards Zennor is what you need. Not for the feint hearted, this 6-mile stretch of coastline is rocky, hilly and quite frankly arduous in places but your reward will be some of the most spectacular views Cornwall has to offer. The brave walk back, the sensible opt for a bus return but either way, once in Zennor there are a couple of pubs to celebrate your accomplishment and refuel.

Cycling

Exploring Cornwall on two wheels is a great way to cover ground and see more of our beautiful county, and with enough designated cycle paths to keep you busy for the duration of your stay, keeping active has never been so easy.

To see the contrasting beauty between Cornwall’s north and south coasts make your way to St Uny Church in Lelant and join St Michael’s Way, a 12.5 mile route between Lelant and St Michael’s Mount, in Marazion. A stop-off in Marazion wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the whimsical and mythical Mount, once said to have been home to Cormoran the Giant.

If discovering Cornwall’s heritage is more up your street then jump on the Mineral Tramways (or part of it) and discover Cornwall’s rich mining past. Many of the trails weave along the tramway and railway routes once used to transport ore from many of the copper and tin mines in the area.

Surfing

With Porthmeor Beach a stone’s throw from our luxury accommodation in St Ives, a spot of surfing is a great way to build some fitness into your stay. If you’re a complete novice, St Ives Surf School offer individual or package lessons that will have you wave-worthy in no time, but if you can already hang-ten with the best of them the waves are yours to own.

With your upper back, shoulders, lower body and core all getting a good workout on the board, Surfing is a great way to shape up during your holiday and the bigger the waves, the harder the workout.

Stand-up Paddleboarding

Or SUP-ing as it’s more affectionately known is a wonderful way to discover St Ives’ secluded coves and is a real test of endurance working your quads, glutes and hamstrings at the same time. Factor in a breeze and you’ll be working even harder with some experts saying that 30 minutes of SUP-ing is equivalent to a 6 mile run.

If you’re new to the SUP world we highly recommend giving it a go. Beginner’s lessons can be arranged with St Ives Surf School (the Porthminster Branch) but if you’ve some experience with a paddle then how about a two-hour guided tour of St Ives’ picturesque coastline? It really is a fantastic way to view St Ives from a different viewpoint. During the tour you’ll also have the opportunity to grab a snorkel and explore life under the water.

Food

We all like to indulge whilst on holiday, and why not? Life is far too short after all but with an abundance of fresh fish available locally there are plenty of healthy options to choose from while staying in your luxury apartment in St Ives. However, if you decide to forego the diet whilst in St Ives (and who would blame you) you can always squeeze in an extra surf or two to make sure your 2018 health and fitness goals don’t suffer too much.
