Open Studios Cornwall

Conor Fletcher

Open Studios Cornwall is a rare opportunity to get a glimpse into the minds and workspaces of some of Cornwall’s many artists, craftsmen and designers. Whether you yourself are an artist looking for inspiration or are looking for a new way to work or an admirer of art and want to take a peek behind the curtain and understand the processes and practices of local artists, Open Studios Cornwall is the project for you. Set all over Cornwall we’re almost inundated with choice, but the West Penwith Area has an incredible range of artists who are opening their doors for those who wish to step inside between Saturday 27th May and Sunday 4th of June. So if you’re staying with us in the Sail Lofts luxury apartments in St Ives and want to take a part in experiencing this incredible initiative all you need to do is step out and look for the orange ‘O’.

Some of the events taking place over the week range from artist workshops to open door studio visits across the county. There is something for everyone, whether you want to get stuck in and learn new talents in a workshop or, if you have that particular artist in mind and want to visit and possibly purchase some art first hand this is your chance.

With 293 artists, craftsmen and designers taking part it’s likely that wherever you find yourself in Cornwall during the week you won’t be too far from a studio to pop by and visit. All of the featured artists can be found online and Open Studios Cornwall have constructed a useful go-to-guide for those looking to journey through the county and stop by some of the many exhibitors.

Samme Charlesworth

Born in London, Samme is a ceramic artist utilising Cornish clay in her creations. Based in Tremethick Cross - just outside Penzance, Samme creates clay ceramics that embody Cornwall’s coastal heritage. Open 11:00 – 16:00 daily throughout the week excluding Wednesday this is a must visit for anyone looking to own art indicative of Cornwall.

Seb West

A St Ives born artist whose studio is a short drive from St Ives to Nancledra, with art that exemplifies the Mediterranean nature of Cornwall’s scenery, Seb’s creations are contemporary reflections of what makes this county so special. With the studio open throughout the week between 10:00 and 17:00 and on weekdays between 11:00 and 16:00 there is no reason to not go and see what Seb has to offer.

Personally there is nothing more enlightening than taking a peek at the inner workings of a project or artist and this is an unrivalled opportunity to get a look into some of Cornwall’s most fascinating creators.

So whether you’re in St Ives or would like to book a stay in the Sail Lofts luxury self catering accommodation and want to get out and about this coming week there’s still time, while there may be limited availability there is still a chance to visit Cornwall and one of the many artists’ open studios. If you are interested in bookings take a look online or contact one of the team on 01736 799175.
