New Year in St Ives
As calendar highlights go, New Year in St Ives has always been one of my favourite nights of the year. Famed for its friendly street party, fantastic fancy dress and impressive fireworks – it’s easy to see why our lovely little town is consistently ranked as one of the top spots in the UK to spend the New Year.

If you’ve never sampled a Cornish new year, here are a few reasons you should definitely give it some consideration…
Street Party Celebrations
New Year in St Ives has been a ‘thing’ for quite for some time – originally started as a locals celebration, its appeal quickly grew and now it’s an event in its own right. Late afternoon the roads are closed in readiness for the crowds that take to the streets to celebrate the turn of another year and revelers mill through the streets showing off their incredible fancy dress efforts (more on that later).
Eclectic Atmosphere
As the celebrations get underway the atmosphere builds as young and old mix and mingle together. A fantastic event for all ages, families with young children will often venture out early to marvel at the costumes before heading for dinner or back to their accommodation. Those looking to enjoy the entire evenings celebrations will enjoy the street party style celebrations before heading to the Harbour to watch the midnight fireworks.
Fancy Dress
A prerequisite really if you want to join in the celebrations and the local charity shops are full of inspiration and ideas in the lead-up to the big event. Whether it’s a silly hat and glasses or a full costume, any effort is appreciated. If you have little ones with you, there’s likely to be many photo opportunities with some of their favourite characters so make sure you have the camera at the ready.
Fireworks
At midnight the Harbour front is the place to be as impressive Fireworks light-up the night sky to celebrate the start of a New Year. The crowds gather together to sing ‘Auld Lang Syne’ and the New Year celebrations draw to a close.
New Year’s Day Walks
Start the year the right way and blow away the cobwebs from the night before with an invigorating New Year walk. Whether you take to the beach for a head-clearing stroll or take to one of the coastal paths for a longer hike, both options are within easy access of our luxury St Ives accommodation.
