Making the most of the sunshine in St Ives

Larissa Ellis-Jones

Let’s face it, everything seems better when the sun is shining and the days are warmer.

Making the most of the weather, however, can sometimes feel a bit pressured; especially in this country with our unpredictable changes in forecasts… so how do you make the most of those perfect days?

Balance the day

Having a good balance in your day will help to make the most of the weather. Get the energy exerting activities out the way in the morning when the day is just beginning and the light is purest. Try a high adrenalin ride with the Blue Thunder Rib Rides, or a nice pleasure cruise over to Seal Island aboard the Dolly P or Nemo.

Then, after you’ve had an adventure of a lifetime and made some awesome memories, recharge and refresh away from the burning midday heat with some alfresco covered dining. Check out: Silco for some small plates, The Moomaids of Zennor for Ice Cream and Olive's Café for some lunch goodies.

After you’ve re-energised you can spend your afternoons perusing and making the most of the many independent shops like the Painted Bird or The Cornish Candy Shoppe; or treat yourself to some evening entertainment at the unique ocean side amphitheatre at the Minack or for a fine meal watching the days sunset.

Have a backup plan

The weather can change, there is no getting away from that in this country, we can have beaming sunshine one minute and then be overcast the next, or even, have a random spout of rain! When the weather has been so warm and hot, sometimes a cooler dip in temps can be welcomed, but what do you do if you’re out and about?

We’re fortunate in St Ives to have many galleries and pottery workshops that are free to walk around and explore. If you find yourself caught out in town in a random dip in weather, why not have a wonder around some of the many inspiring and creative studios in St Ives, such as the New Craftsman Gallery or the Barbara Hepworth Museum.

Remember you have what feels like endless light

You have the whole day and evening. In the summer, with the brighter mornings and long-drawn-out summery evenings, you get light for what feels like a solid 24 hours, and it’s blissful.

Taking your time to wonder and soak up the weather can be a rejuvenating and rewarding experience. Put aside the stresses of everyday life for the day and make the most of wondering around some of the many gardens and memorial parks we have around us here in St Ives. Check out Penbeagle Nature Reserve or Trewyn Gardens.

Maybe you want to spend the day on the sand, listening to the waves and soaking up the seaside atmosphere, you might be tempted to dip your toes into the crystal blue waters or give surfing ago, check out the St Ives Surf School to help you make the most of your day at the beach. These activities will last the whole day, but will definitely leave you feeling like you’ve made the most of the endless sunshine.
