Choose St Ives this summer

Kelly Weaver

As the stormy weather subsides and today offers a calmer day with plenty of sunshine, summer is on my mind. Yes this may be slightly optimistic but with the days and weeks flying by, beach season (my personal favourite) will soon be upon us. From stress-free traveling to luxury Cornish ice cream there are so many reasons why many families choose to return to Cornwall, and our luxury St Ives accommodation, year after year…

Stress Free Traveling
As a fellow parent with young children, traveling in any form has its challenges but add-in airport queues, delays, time differences and lost luggage and you have a recipe for disaster. Holiday in the UK and most of this stress can be avoided – yes there’s the car journey but with films, games and regular pit stops your holiday is assured to get off to a more harmonious start.

Award-winning beaches
With a blue-flag beach on your doorstep, and many more equally beautiful beaches all within walking distance, you will be spoiled for choice on those long summer days. From surf lessons on Porthmeor to SUP sessions at Porthminster, fun awaits on, and off, the water. If you are considering any water sports during your time in St Ives, Sail Lofts guests receive a discount at St Ives Surf School.

Luxury Cornish Ice Cream
A wonderful way to punctuate those sunny beach days for any child, a daily ice cream is essential when on holiday (well, it is in our house anyway). When it St Ives, my personal favourite is Moomaid of Zennor – both of my children are dairy intolerant so stumbling across their dark chocolate sorbet has been quite a revelation. Another firm favourite is Willy Wallers located on the Harbour Front which is really handy if you are more centrally based.

Nostalgic family holidays
St Ives is one of those few places that retains it’s nostalgic value and many families return year after year because they holidayed here as children and want to create similar memories for their children and grandchildren. We wholeheartedly agree that St Ives is a special place and love hosting multi- generations of families sometimes across multiple apartments.

Space to enjoy
Yes St Ives in the summer is synonymous with busy crowds but deviate away from the hot spots and you can often find your own piece of Cornwall to enjoy. If you like to keep active on holiday the coastal paths offer a wonderful reprieve from the summer crowds – the St Ives to Zennor walk is a particular favourite, although perhaps not suitable for younger children. I’m personally looking forward to getting my newly acquired SUP on the water and exploring some of Cornwall’s wonderfully hidden coves.

Food glorious food
No blog touting St Ives as one of the best staycation spots in the UK would be complete without a mention about the incredible cuisine. Fresh seafood is of course a staple but the choice of alternatives on offer in such a small town is quite remarkable. When we have the children in tow our usual go-to’s are Hub St Ives, Firehouse Bar & Grill or the Beer & Bird. On those rare child-free evenings we adore tapas at Porthmeor Beach Café or for a real treat, a window table at Porthminster Beach Café is hard to beat.

If St Ives is in the running for your 2022 summer holiday we’re confident that you won’t be disappointed. The little Cornish gem that we call home really does have all the ingredients for a wonderfully memorable family holiday.
