Autumnal weekend escape

Katy Peck

Being fortunate enough to live in this wonderful part of the country, makes it incredibly easy to take it for granted, so last weekend, my partner and I pledged to spend a long weekend in St Ives, making the most of what can be discovered just moments from our doorstep.

Starting with a trip to St Ives beaches, walking past Porthgwidden Beach at 10am on a Saturday morning, with its golden sand, and slow rippling surf it was too irresistible to not disturb the perfectly smooth sand with a run down to the tide line, taking enjoyment in every step, squishing in to the cold, smooth and recently turned sand. The café here is amongst some of the best in St Ives for breakfast, so if I had time for a leisurely feast, looking out across the St Ives Bay, I would have pulled up in one of their window seats. A good stop to remember as Porthgwidden Beach Cafe is only moments from the Sail Lofts - St Ives luxury apartments.

The afternoon brought a shopping trip, ambling through St Ives high street, with its bursting window displays, and quirky shop fronts enticing you in, show casing some of the best thriving independent shops you could hope to find, with something to suit every budget and need, from interior treats to high end fashion.

The evening found us ordering take away Blas Burgers Works (as recommended by guests staying at the Sail Lofts luxury apartments) where we intended to dine on Porthminster Beach, sadly however, due to the wind getting up, we parked up at the top of St Ives and watched the town come alight as the sun set over the roof tops, which turned out to be rather spectacular.

Sunday we made our way to the Hayle Towans, with the end of the seasonal dog ban we took our Golden Retriever back to her rightful stomping ground, where she immediately dashed and laid down in the Hayle Estuary, and could not be coaxed out for a good ten minutes, whilst she made up for lost time. When she finally realised that we were going to head further along the beach, she returned to us for a slow wander down to the sea, not quite as spritely as in other years, as Hershey is now of a senior age, and was just happy to feel the sand under her paws and a good sea breeze.

Making the most of the fortunate weather, in the afternoon we headed to Birdies Bistro, to sit outside and watch the birds of the nature reserve and estuary glide overhead, and pad around in the marshes, exposed at low tide. We treated ourselves to a slice of Raspberry and Elderflower cake, with a mug of tea and basked in the early autumnal sunshine.

Feeling rather sugar enthused we took a meandering walk through the nature reserve and along on to St Erth following the waterway, sadly to turn back as our choice of footwear was not cut out for the still rather soggy, muddy path, with a promise to return next week with wellies!
