Dublin to Dusseldorf all aboard to St Ives

Katy Peck

A short break in St Ives may seem like a distant dream but with Newquay Airport, St Ives is closer than you think…

Arrive Friday afternoon ready for a drink in the Union Inn prior to checking in to your luxury self catering Sail Lofts apartment in St Ives where you can freshen up for dinner at the Porthmeor Beach Café which is just a short stroll away and the perfect place to kick-off your 48 hour stop over in style.

Wake up in your sun filled room, ready for a day adventuring St Ives and the coastal walks beyond. Starting off at the Porthminster Kitchen for breakfast with a harbour view, eating your eggs as you watch the streets come to life, with the hustle and bustle of a working harbour town.

Stroll out of St Ives towards Carbis Bay to dip your toes in the cool waters of Porthminster Beach, before following the headland into Carbis Bay. Around the coastal footpath towards Lelant you will discover Scarlett Wines, where one can peruse their deli and wine store ready for a tasty supper in self catering, then hop on the scenic branch line train back to St Ives - the views are out of this world. Enjoy a leisurely stroll across St Ives back to your luxury abode for the weekend, and lounge out in style whilst sampling your deli treats.

Evening entertainment is abound throughout the year, from the exquisite watching of the sun disappearing beyond the Burthallan Hills, to getting to know the locals in the towns numerous pubs and bars. We recommend stopping off at The Queens for a taste of Cornish Tarquin's Gin.

Easing in to Sunday we recommend walking over to the slipway on Porthmeor Beach from your apartment and traversing the length of the beach to find West Beach Bakery, to enjoy their breakfast, we love the West Beach French Toast with maple syrup, banana and salted caramel.

Sunday is a great day for savouring the town’s vast selection of galleries, home to some of the best modern artists in Britain, along with the Barbara Hepworth Garden and Tate St Ives collection. Guests staying at the Sail Lofts luxury apartments in St Ives have complimentary access to Tate as well as 10% off in the café and museum shop. Great if you are thinking of returning home with an artistic keepsake.

Throughout the year St Ives is constantly changing, but Sunday’s remain a day of relaxing, for ambling the cobbled streets, gazing at the beautifully coloured houses, and dining on exquisite food from St Ives's wonderful choice of restaurants.

Being in Cornwall a 48 hour pit stop would not be complete without either a Pasty or portion of fish and chips. Should a Pasty have your name on it head to the St Ives Bakery in Fore Street, where you will find the flakiest pastry mixed with the best Cornish pasty fillings that man could ever have dreamt of. If fish and chips are more your thing, we recommend popping by Harbour Fish and Chips on the harbour front, and dine in and watch the world go by, my partner rates the scampi highly (should you fancy a light bite rather than a full slice of cod).

Pull up a bench in the Rum and Crab Shack and make like a local and enjoy the juice of Pirates from around the world. Their collection of rum is unrivalled within the town, and you cannot go far wrong by ordering yourself a dark and stormy.
