Around St Ives Harbour

Around St Ives harbour you will find a vibrant mix of old and new

A quick stroll from our luxury self-catering accommodation through the winding streets of the town will inevitably lead you down to St Ives’ vibrant hub, along the ancient fishing harbour. There is a mix of traditional Cornish history and culture, with an array of restaurants, bars, shops and boat hire companies.

The giant granite piers sheltering the boats from the Atlantic were originally built in the 1700’s by John Smeaton when pilchard exports were at their peak, and to this day you can still watch the morning’s mackerel catch being unloaded from the boats. Along the harbour you will find traditional Cornish pubs, friendly cafes and critically acclaimed restaurants. Every Thursday St Ives holds a farmers market at The Guildhall between 9:30am – 2:00pm showcasing a range of superb local food and products.

Outside St Ives Lifeboat Station, which is open to the public in summer, you will find St Ives Boats operating regular trips out to Seal Island for a bit of seal spotting, and if you’re very lucky you might catch sight of a school of dolphins frolicking in the waves. There are also bird watching and fishing trips, as well as private charters.

The outgoing tide reveals a stretch of fine golden sand. This is an ideal spot for taking a break to enjoy one of our famous local ice-creams from the scattering of ice cream shops along the front, whilst soaking up the sights and sounds of this fascinating working harbour.
