Dog Friendly St Ives | A guide to the beaches and tides

Dog friendly beaches in St Ives

The time of year that you choose to visit Cornwall has a lot of bearing on which beaches you'll be able to enjoy. The ban comes into place on the Sunday before Easter and is lifted on the 30th September. This makes October to early spring the best time to visit. You and your friend will be able to take your pick of the beaches and you're likely to have them largely to yourselves!

*Please note. Dogs are only allowed on these beaches outside of the beach ban. It is in place from the Sunday before Easter until 30th September.

Porthmeor*

The crème de la crème (we think) and right on the door step of your dog friendly luxury apartment. Porthmeor beach has plenty of room to run even at high tide, as well as a great Cafe and takeaway. Porthmeor is affected by the beach ban therefore visiting between October and Easter is a must. Dogs are welcome to join you for leisurely drinks or a spot of alfresco dining all year round on Porthmeor Cafe's heated, covered terrace.

Porthminster*

Just a stroll through town from your dog friendly apartment. Or, should you wish to take a more scenic route, start by walking around the island before heading down to Porthgwidden and then along to Bamaluz and the Harbour. At low tide you can walk straight onto Porthminster from the harbour without having to leave the beach! Porthminster is a little smaller than Porthmeor and you can generally count on calmer seas on that side of the coast. You're also able to access the coastal path to Carbis Bay beach* by following the path up behind Porthminster Cafe's garden.

Porthgwidden*

Porthgwidden is sandwiched between the Island and Bamaluz. It's a good family beach due to it's size and like its sibling beaches, it has a takeaway and restaurant for anything you need during your adventure. The restaurant has recently undergone a transformation and now has an undercover, heated terrace similar to Porthmeor and Porthminster. What better way to while away an afternoon than gazing out to sea with a blanket to keep you snug?

The Harbour*

Along with Porthmeor, the Harbour is a popular dog walking destination and you're likely to meet others out with their four-legged friends. At low tide the harbour is fairly vast and you're able to walk behind Smeaton's Pier as well as across to Porthminster. At high tide it all but dissapears, leaving just a corner of sand by the arches of Smeaton's Pier. The week's tide times are always on display on our 'What's On' board, located in the courtyard.

Bamaluz

Dogs are welcome on this little gem of a beach all year round. Bamaluz is just a few minutes away from your dog friendly luxury apartment. This particular beach is very rocky so visiting at low tide will ensure your friend has optimum space to play. You may even be able to make it round the old pier onto the harbour!

Lambeth Walk

Another all year-round-winner, Lambeth Walk is located just behind the RNLI lifeboat house. It is often overlooked as it dissapears almost entirely at high tide. If you have visited St Ives before you may have noticed people balancing stones on this beach. It is also where the Stennack stream meets the sea. When the tide is fully out Lambeth walk can be reached from the harbour and Porthminster!
