Dog Walking on the North Coast

Abi Love

This week at the Sail Lofts we've had Rachel join the team as a part of her work experience, as she lives in Cornwall and has a number of pets, she's kindly put together some of her thoughts on exploring the Cornish coast.

My name is Rachel and at the moment I am doing my work experience at The Sail Lofts in St Ives. I am enjoying my experience here and the team are lovely and also very friendly. I live in Tehidy, which is located near Camborne.

I currently have two chocolate Cocker Spaniels Gracie, an eight year old, and Bess a two year old who is full of energy and affection; she is actually Gracie’s great-niece. As a family we all love walking them.

There are so many beautiful places to walk in Cornwall, especially with your furry friends.

The North Coastal Path

Godrevy is a lovely place to start with its main landmark, the lighthouse. Whether you want to walk on the beach or on the dunes, it is a lovely place to walk with the dogs. On the dunes you can walk all year around and it is generally quieter than the beach is, especially if you get there early you are guaranteed a good parking space.

If we are lucky enough and the tide is out we walk to Hayle with the dogs and they absolutely love it. Bess, the younger dog loves water so much, she doesn’t mind if it’s the sea or trying to swim in the smallest rock pool, she is determined she wants to go for a swim – much to our displeasure sometimes!

Walking on the dunes is so much fun you can pretty much walk the length of the coast path along the North Coast of Cornwall. Depending on how much time you have, let your imagination take place and explore the coast. We also walk to Hells Mouth, which despite the name - can have the perfect sunset views. There is also a café there, which if a break is needed is a good place to stop before you carry on if you wish.

Tehidy Woods

For us Tehidy Woods is such a convenient place to walk especially with your family. You are pretty much free to walk wherever you like. However dogs are not allowed to go around the pond because of the ducks and swans (these places are clearly marked so no need to worry).

The woods have four different entrances of which three of them have car parks and one has a café, which is essential for us as after our walk we go and have coffee and cake! The café also has outside and inside seating so it is suitable for all weather.

Our dogs love the woods, as you never do the same walk twice. However they can get very muddy, especially in the winter.

In the summer the woods is very busy especially when the weather is nice. Again if you want a good parking space then the earlier the better.
