THE TATE, ST IVES

a landmark for modern art,

the tate st. ives.

The opening of Tate St. Ives in 1993 stamped St Ives firmly on the map as Cornwall’s creative hub and a place of cultural significance to the international art world.

Overlooking Porthmeor Beach (and just along the road from The Sail Lofts), the Gallery itself is a stunning example of modern architecture. With dramatic views across the town and harbour to the east, and Porthmeor Beach to the north, it provides a unique opportunity to view works of art in the surroundings in which, in many cases, they were actually created.

Since the late nineteenth century two 'schools' of art had grown up in west Cornwall, at Newlyn and St Ives, and before Tate St Ives opened, there had been no public gallery dedicated to the distinctive modern art produced in the town. The Gallery now regularly displays works produced by members of the influential St Ives School, with pieces by leading international contemporary and modern artists from around the world. Through its Artist Residency programme and other support projects, the Gallery encourages the creation of new work relating to the local environment. With a busy schedule of changing exhibitions, events, talks and activities for visitors, the Gallery also hosts a variety of community arts based activities throughout the year.

As part of our commitment in supporting the Tate, The Sail Lofts are Corporate Members, and as guest you are entitled to a 50% discount on admission prices, with a 10% discount on purchases from the Tate shop and cafe bar. You’ll also receive 50% discount on admission at the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, where you can explore the artist’s studio and gardens, and see a number of her original sculptures, drawings and paintings.
