Working from her studio in St Ives, and the community-based Porthmeor Print Workshop, Sonya Walters’ strong, luminous paintings and mono-prints reflect her joy of life, people and place.

‘Travel fuels my interest in the history and identity of different cultures. I carry a notebook and camera to record events as they occur; the social interaction at play and the feelings involved. Back in my studio these significant memories, whether inspired by times spent in the Caribbean or rooted in Cornwall with its special sense of place and light, become central to my work and ideas’.

Building up layers of oil on canvas, with subtle areas of colour and shape, Sonya often paints over discarded canvases, allowing what’s underneath to influence new ideas as the work emerges into a fresh and vibrant piece.

Sonya’s experience of print making contrasts with the contemplatory nature of her painting studio. The immediacy and physical nature of printmaking has influenced her painting, whilst her unique mono-prints have evolved into very ‘painterly’ pieces.
