Often described as Cornwall’s ‘Jewel in the Crown’, St. Ives is one of the UK’s most sought after holiday destinations.
Situated on the Atlantic coast, St. Ives enjoys a warm, temperate climate thanks to the Gulf stream and westerly winds from the Azores. It has five golden sandy beaches, clear Atlantic waters and wonderful coastal scenery. There are over 30 commercial art galleries, along with the Tate Gallery, the Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Museum and the Leach Pottery. It also has an excellent selection of shops, restaurants, bars and cafés.
Few holiday destinations can offer as much as St. Ives in terms of location - well positioned to explore the Land’s End peninsular and other parts of Cornwall. With the North and South coasts only nine miles apart, it is easy to explore very different scenery, coastal and inland, without travelling far.
The coast road from St. Ives to Land’s End, and round to Penzance, has been described as one of Europe’s most beautiful drives, taking in some of the best coastal scenery in Britain, including Zennor, Pendeen, Cape Cornwall, Porthcurno, Lamorna Cove, Mousehole and the Lizard Peninsula. Further afield you’ll find Truro and Falmouth (with its National Maritime Museum), Newquay,St Austell (with the Eden Project), Padstow, Rock, St. Mawes, the Helford River and even more coastal scenery and quiet sandy beaches and coves. The beautiful Isles of Scilly are also only a short flight away.
Today St. Ives is one of the most visited resorts in the UK. Its spectacular location, numerous sandy beaches, coastal scenery, fashionable shops, restaurants, cafés, bars and galleries and, of course, its temperate climate all makes St. Ives a ‘must visit’ destination. Here is just a small selection of what some of the travel guides say about St. Ives:
“St Ives has long been a destination for fisherman and artists. It’s a beautiful little town with some excellent restaurants… All of the beaches around St Ives Bay are staggeringly beautiful "
Lonely Planet Blue List
“A stone’s throw from the harbour area is a host of narrow streets and passageways comprising the old part of the town, all interconnecting and offering innumerable opportunities to explore. Whatever the reason for coming to St. Ives -the surfing on blue flag beaches, the coastal walks or the art, you can find it here"
